As autumn brings refreshing breezes and osmanthus blossoms fill the air, the annual Double Ninth Festival arrives. To carry forward the traditional Chinese virtue of respecting and caring for the elderly and foster a social atmosphere of helping senior citizens, volunteer representatives from SOTEC visited Chengdu No.2 Social Welfare Institute for a public welfare campaign themed Respecting the Elderly on Double Ninth Festival, Warm Companionship All the Way, spending joyful time with more than 30 elderly residents.
Warmth for the Double Ninth Festival, Care Close at Hand
Six SOTEC volunteers arrived at the welfare institute punctually at 9 a.m. Guided by the institute’s staff, the volunteers split into groups to chat warmly with the seniors, listen to their life stories and inquire about their physical conditions.
Handicraft Creation, Inheritance of Traditional Culture
The public welfare activity featured handcraft sessions with distinctive Double Ninth Festival cultural elements. With the assistance of volunteers, the seniors made traditional dogwood sachets with great enthusiasm. From selecting aromatic materials, filling the inner pouches to tying the sachets tightly, every step was filled with joy. These delicate sachets symbolize blessings for warding off misfortune and convey sincere festive regards.
In addition, the volunteers guided the elderly to make practical wormwood massage hammers for meridian relaxation. The volunteers offered patient explanations and one-on-one guidance, while the seniors learned earnestly and communicated with one another. The finished wormwood hammers serve for daily massage to dredge meridians and boost blood circulation, which were warmly welcomed by the elderly.
Heartfelt Gift Packages Delivering Warmth
SOTEC prepared thoughtful festive gift packs for the seniors, including vacuum flasks, hand cream, meridian massage combs, thermal sleep socks and other daily necessities, aiming to bring them warmth and solicitude as the weather gradually turns cooler. Witnessing the joyful smiles on the elderly’s faces, every volunteer felt deeply touched.
Giving Back with Gratitude, Shouldering Social Responsibility

This visit brought joy and warmth to the seniors, meanwhile enabling the volunteers to gain a profound understanding of the importance of caring for the elderly and giving back to society.
