Recently, the terms "carbon neutral" and "carbon peak" have come into public view rapidly.
On December 18, 2020, the Central Economic Work Conference laid out eight major tasks for 2021, the eighth of which is to achieve carbon peak and carbon neutral work.
A growing number of countries are adopting carbon neutrality as a national strategy, which is seen as an updated version of the Paris Agreement, which 178 countries signed on 22 April 2016 and came into force on 4 November 2016. It was approved by the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress in China on September 3, 2016, raising it to the legal level.
The Paris Agreement calls for the rise in global average temperature to be limited to 2 ° C above pre-industrial levels and efforts to keep it below 1.5 ° C. According to the scientific assessment of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), the time to achieve global co2 neutralization of the 2℃ target is around 2070, and the time to achieve global CO2 neutralization of the 1.5℃ target is around 2050.
This means that China's total carbon emissions will drop by more than 65 percent by 2050 compared with the current level, and the transition period from peak to carbon neutral in China will take only 30 years, while developed countries need 60 to 70 years.
